Peter Wilkins and Dermod Sweeney(Catherine's father) test themselves in this year's edition of the 6-Day challenge across the Sahara.
The race commences on 30th March - updates here,as and when. Peter is running for a charity - more details as they go!
There is a vibrant website - www.darbaroud.com/resultats
So,Day 1 and Peter is 767th in 8h.19m.27s,with Dermod immediately behind in 8.23.29! A few have abandoned already but 794 started Day 2,which is in progress. Day 3 is 40.5k from Oued El Jdaid to Ba Hallou,if you're any the wiser!
Day 2 and Peter moves up a couple of places to 765th(17h.30.15),with 790 completing. Sadly,Dermod has been forced to abandon the task.
Sheer determination is obviously keeping Peter going - with another batch of inevitable 'abandons',he holds 747th place with 760 completing Stage 3,the halfway point. He has now run for 28h.02.37!!
Onto Stage 4,and Peter advances considerably! There have obviously been some adjustments and a deal of drop outs, but Peter keeps going and is now up to 613th(with 751 completing the stage)in a gross time of 45h.36.07(that's 11 hours on the move each of the 4 days - he deserves your sponsorship).
Peter completes the penultimate(5th)leg with an overall time of 53h.49.47 which puts him in 601st from a field(or is it a dune?) of 747 finishers, with one day to go.
Peter lifted himself a further 10 places on the last leg to finish in 591st with an overall time of 55h.59m.12s - a splendid finale to a real grueller! And now he's contemplating the London!
